Winter Shoe Appeal For Syrian Children

(Photo: Sunday's Zaman)

Turkey is currently home to 1.9 million Syrian refugees, with nearly 60 per cent of them children.
As the winter is fast approaching, and the cold weather already affecting thousands of Syrian families in the border area of Turkey who are facing night-time temperatures that regularly dip below zero.
'LILY' is launching an emergency winter shoe appeal to help these misfortunate families.
LILY's helpers have visited many Syrian families in Turkey and witnessed the conditions they lived in and seen the numerous children without shoes or any kind of footwear. As have we here in Ku┼čadasi as many of the the Syrian refugees arriving here and sleeping on the streets have no or inadequate footwear for the winter.

Images of children with no shoes in the bitter winter snow and mud in the past years have prompted LILY to lauch a shoe appeal these last four years. Therefore once again we are asking for your help.

With no solution to the conflict in sight, most of the Syrian refugees in Turkey see no prospect of returning home in the near future, and have little opportunity to restart their lives in exile. By helping these refugees, 'LILY' hopes to reduce the number of desperate Syrians resorting to smugglers and falling prey to traffickers to reach safety elsewhere.

The number of refugees has reached an all time high with complete chaos in NGOs, and a complete lack of institutional coordination. So grass-roots organizations like us and many other initiatives are taking the lead to try and do something, but still the need is very very high.

We are asking you to donate just 5 British Pounds (8 US Dollar) which will buy a child a pair of winter shoes/ boots. Being able to source them locally helps us to get them to the Syrian children quicker.

As the cold season approaches, responding quickly is crucial.
