The LILY Challenge

Please can you help us?
We have a challenge to provide 2,000 blankets for Syrian children in a refugee camp nr Adana here in Turkey. That's 128,000 squares!
These will be needed in September when the weather begins to cool.
We at LILY are currently trying to provide the children with a little comfort by giving each child their very own blanket made especially for them.
Our blankets are lovingly made by adults and children from all walks of life and many different countries around the wold. They provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to Syrian refugee children who have been made homeless by war and will send a message of concern and hope. Your participation is important in sending this message of hope, the thought that someone cares, that this beautiful, handmade blanket was created especially for them. It doesn't really matter what it looks like: even the most basic knitted blanket patterns will yield perfect results – a smile.
Please consider making a square or two, any spare wool you have can be knitted into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. We get together every tuesday to sew the squares together into blankets so a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

This challenge will enable us to provide a blanket for all children in just 1 camp, there are 18 camps at the moment. So far we have provided 6,214 blankets so we still have a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal of providing each and every Syrian child with a blanket.

Whilst writing this post I have just received 41 squares that means we now need:                                                                                    127,959
Please help us crack this target!
I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we are asking for just 3 squares ( of course we'll also accept more). If you could knit or crochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great!

Do We Still Need Squares?

               YES PLEASE!
Is the answer to a question I seem to be asked a lot at the moment - Do you still need squares in the summer months?
Even though the weather is warming up here in Turkey as the summer begins, all to soon it will turn to winter again and with 347,815 Syrian refugees here at the moment the number grows daily as the fighting in Syria intensifies.  Even though we may not send blankets off during the hot weather we hope to be able to stockpile them and start sending again around September time. So the answer to the question is Yes please! we do still want squares throughout the summer.

Knitting Instructions
FOR ONE 8"/20 cms SQUARE, you will need:
Yarn from a 100 gram (3.5 oz) ball of yarn or scraps of yarn
worsted weight , double knit or 8ply
Size 4mm needles  6 (USA)
A yarn sewing needle.
Cast on 32 - 40 stitches ( depending on tension, try to make your stitches neither too loose nor too tight to help ensure uniform squares)
 Row 1: knit
Row 2: knit. These two rows form the 'garter' stitch knitting pattern for your square but you use any stitch you prefer, beascreative as you like. Continue knitting  until you have knitted a square
To ensure you square is 8"/20cm either use a tape measure .

 Cast off
Use your yarn sewing needle to sew in all the yarn ends using a darning method

VERY IMPORTANT
Leave a one metre length of your yarn attached to your work after you have cast off. This will be used to join the squares together.
but if you're changing colors work in your other tails.  DO NOT TIE AND CUT IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE KNOT, THAT IS GUARANTEED TO COME UNDONE.  Knot if you want, but leave a tail and work in your ends.

We work with reputable, experienced relief agencies to securely transport and distribute our hand-knit and crocheted blankets.

Blankets For Syrian Babies and Young Children.

There are an estimated 400,000 refugees here in Turkey, with 150,000 Syrians leaving their home country every day, a total of 1 million is expected here by the end of the year. At the moment there are 18 refugee camps and 6 more in the process of being built. From the very beginning of the crisis in Syria, children have been its forgotten victims – facing death, trauma and suffering, and deprived of basic humanitarian aid. Conflict is threatening children’s lives in Syria from their first days of life. Mothers and their newborns are at greater risk of complications during childbirth. Many hospitals and health workers are being deliberately attacked, so people are reluctant to take the risk of going to hospital; across the country, a third of hospitals have been put out of action. This means more births are taking place at home, without a skilled birth attendant.

Help us to at least provide a little comfort for these babies and young children  by knitting or crocheting 8 inch squares. Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

I realise the cost of sending items by post especially to Turkey can be costly which is why we are asking for just 3 squares ( of course we'll also accept more). If you could knit or crochet just 3 squares they would fit easily into an envelope and postage shouldn't be too great!

It really will make a difference to a child's life!

Help 'LILY' Provide A Little Comfort For Syrian Children

Worsening battles between government forces and rebels are forcing more and more people to flee each day. The youngest refugees have been born in exile. Every day, over 125 Syrian babies enter the world as refugees. 17% of Syrian refugees have not reached their fifth birthday. 36% are less than 12 years old. 48% are younger than 18. Children are arriving cold and fearful, with only the clothes on their backs.
Some are injured and most are visibly traumatised. As the conflict lingers, these young Syrians are at risk of becoming a lost generation. The average refugee has already spent 107 nights in exile. Hopes of returning home anytime soon are slim.
Can you help us provide a little comfort for these
children?
Help us send a message of concern and hope!

Any spare wool you have can be knitted, crocheted or woven into eight inch squares and then we'll stitch them all together into a blanket. No waste and a child with nothing gets a warm and colourful, cover for their bed!

If Knitters Ruled The World

If Knitters and Crocheters ruled the world I'm sure the world would be a far better place. Judging by the response of knitters and crocheters to the Syrian crisis. In march last year I put out a plea for 8 inch squares to make blankets for the Syrian children living in refugee camps in Turkey. Knitters and crocheters around the world jumped right in and squares started arriving, not only squares but hats, sweaters, socks and many other knitted and crocheted items to help bring warmth and comfort to the Syrian children who have been and are still living in such terrible conditions. Since starting we have received 274,995 squares plus 1,469 completed blankets, we've sewn the squares to make blankets for the children and so far have managed to give out 6,215 blankets and although this is absolutely fantastic it's not enough, there are 322,609 Syrian refugees in Turkey and 60 -70% of them are children.
PLEASE KEEP THE SQUARES COMING!
